Carlie Pipe – A Bajan Running Champ
Kurama Magazine writer Carlie Pipe has once again proven how multi-talented and determined she is. Carlie recently participated in the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Denmark last Saturday. She completed it at a new personal best – 1:32:58, about 5 minutes faster than her last half marathon in December. Carlie took a moment to talk about what it was like representing Barbados in such a global setting.

This month is celebrated as Black History Month in some quarters and African Heritage Month in others. As we sit contemplating the significance of these celebrations, it is our belief that as a people this celebration though official for a month should be reinforced year round.

2013 has been a pretty good year for a Caribbean presence in the pop culture scene. As I’ve done in the past, I thought it would be a great way to start the new year by recognizing the coolest Caribbean people of 2013. Whether they were raised in the Caribbean or are a part of the diaspora, these artistes, celebrities and sports stars have done their countries proud or have been truly intriguing on a global scale.

Operation Triple Threat (OTT) Summer Performing Arts Boot Camp students will be “on top of the charts” when they offer a joyous performance of ‘Fame! JR.’ on August 23rd, announced Freddie Gershon, Chairman of Music Theatre International (MTI). ‘Fame! JR.’ is based on the hit motion picture which was turned into a long-running television series. The musical is part of the MTI Broadway Junior Collection®, MTI’s special collection of musicals for younger performers.

The Yonni Red Show Salon & Dreadlock Training Center, a popular Irvington, NJ salon featuring the latest and most requested dreadlock styling, announces the Grand Opening of its new second location at 1023 Clinton Ave. The Yonni Red Show Salon II will open its doors on April 15, 2012 at 10 a.m. The physical expansion also allows Ms. Red to expand her team. She is currently accepting resumes from talented stylists. She is also welcoming new clientele.

Operation Triple Threat: Sing. Dance. Act in association with local NGO, the Barbados Youth Development Council (BYDC), will be holding auditions for their second annual Musical Theatre Summer Boot Camp on April 1st, 2012.

Such a celebration is one that was hard fought for a long time by women for more than a century.
