Kadooment Countdown

Grand Kadooment is approaching fast and furiously. With about a week and a half left, there are some big events to seal the cap on the competitions and signal the climax of *Crop Over 2012. Here are the major events to expect in the days ahead.

10) Sunday July 29th – Soca Royale
All roads lead to Bushy Park for the crowning of the Party Monarch and the Sweet Soca. Soca guns will blaze as the action heats up the stage for the ultimate party and show down of the so called best of the best. There will be the tunes for those who love to slow wine and those who love to wukup dem waist.

9) Tuesday July 31st – Socatitans
This event highlights the clash between Mr Crop Over (Lil Rick) and Mr Fete (Machel Montano and the HD Family).

8) Wednesday August 1st – Folk Concert
The Emancipation Folk Concert’ is slated to be a celebration of Barbadian folklore, dance, drama and music. The Queen’s Park Steel Shed’s stage is where the old and the young will come together to contribute performances representing stories told from not so long ago.

7) Thursday August 2nd – Crop Over Visual Arts Festival Evening of Interpretation
This exhibition comprises of two-dimensional and three-dimensional craft. The evening of interpretation explores the meaning of the art pieces. The Grand Salle will be filled with music and spoken word from a range of the island’s artists.

6) Thursday August 2nd – Bacchanal Time vs. The Best of Crop Over
This showdown features the full cast of the Bacchanal Time calypso tent and special guest appearances of the top soca and calypso artistes of 2012.

5) Friday August 3rd – Bridgetown Market
This three day street fair is one of the biggest of its type held in Barbados annually. It kicks off with Foreday Morning jam and climaxes after Grand Kadooment. The Spring Garden Highway is filled with vendors selling items ranging from toys to food, clothes to craft and jewellery.

4) Friday August 3rd – Pic-0-De-Crop Finals
The battleground at Kensington Oval will be prepared for the nine coming to dethrone calypsonian Popsicle. With one woman in the grabs for the crown, this year we could have a Calypso Queen.

3) Saturday August 4th – Foreday Morning Jam
Foreday morning, which is the Bajan equivalent to J’ouvert, gets started right after the Pic-o-De-Crop Finals. This official after party consists of revelling in mud, oil and paint in the streets.

2) Sunday August 5th – Cohobblopot
This is the melting pot of the season, the big event before the climax of the 2012 Crop Over. Lil Rick with his special performance dubbed ‘Hypa-Drive’ is not to be missed. Also on stage will be Krosfyah shelling out their tunes. Barbadian international recording artist and songwriter Shontelle is set to make an appearance.

1) Monday August 6th – Grand Kadooment
The big climax of Crop Over 2012, Grand Kadooment, is the ultimate celebration everyone is awaiting. Many revel from Warrens through The National Stadium for judging to Spring Garden Highway. Bands and their members jump from the early morning through until the evening in their costumes to the sweet sounds of calypso and soca music. Those not in bands will line the roads to visually take in all the action, take pictures, eat and have a grand time with friends and family.

*Crop Over: The most anticipated festival in Barbados, which was originally founded to celebrate the end of the sugar cane harvest. It begins in June and comes to a climax with Grand Kadooment on the first Monday of August. Kadooment is a massive carnival parade with revellers dressed in vibrant, eye-catching costumes.
